Frequently asked questions
What is an IMO number?
It is the seven-digit number the International Maritime Organization assigns to a ship. It stays with the hull for life, even when the ship changes its name, flag or owner. The last digit is a check digit, so a typo can be caught before any search runs.
Why is a name search not enough for ships?
Sanctioned ships are often renamed and reflagged to avoid detection. A tanker listed as NS BRAVO may sail today as BELGOROD. The IMO number links those names, which is why we search by IMO first and then by every name tied to it.
What is the shadow fleet?
It is the group of older tankers that move Russian, Iranian or North Korean oil outside the price cap and sanctions, usually with opaque ownership and weak insurance. The US, UK and EU have designated hundreds of these ships by IMO number.
Does a clean result mean the voyage is safe?
No. A ship can be clean while its owner, manager or cargo is not. Screen the registered owner and the counterparties as well, and check the ports on the route.
How often are the vessel lists updated?
complead ingests updates from the official publishers within minutes of publication, the same data our paying customers screen against.
Is the vessel check free?
Yes. The on-screen check needs no account. The full PDF report is sent to a work email, with up to five reports a day.
