Every PEP and everyone connected to them

Data on politically exposed persons is available globally, covering four categories from heads of state to local officials, and including their relatives and close associates in each record.

Why this matters

A PEP list without classes and relatives is half a control

PEP screening fails in two ways. It treats every PEP the same, even though risk runs from a head of state to a local mayor, and it fails to take into account relatives and close associates who usually control the account. Since the person's position, the role they occupy and the people they are connected to all have an effect on the level of risk, the way the match is flagged should also change. Before deciding, you must consider the class, the role, and all the connections surrounding the PEP.

All classes included

Head of state, governors, and mayors fall into different categories and involve different levels of risk. Since each person of importance has a category, a local official and a present minister are given different scores and your risk rating is therefore maintained.

Relatives and associates linked

The spouse or business partner who actually holds the account is linked to the PEP. You see the connection before the relationship starts, not after an investigation finds it.

Status that keeps up

When someone takes office, changes roles, or leaves office, the record updates with them. A status change is captured as it happens, so no one decides on yesterday's status.

How it works

Four steps, from a public role to a classed PEP record

Scroll to advance
  1. Step 01 Source the roles

complead sources public office, state enterprise and international roles from official and public sources around the world. Each role is linked to its source, with the jurisdiction and the dates in office.

  2. Step 02 Assign the tier

PEPs are classified into four categories (Class 1–4) based on their position, level of seniority, and degree of political influence.

  3. Step 03 Link relatives and associates

Relatives and close associates are connected to the PEP through records that relate to them individually, along with the type of relationship.

  4. Step 04 Version and deliver

All records are stored with versions; whenever a role changes, a class changes, or someone leaves office, the change date is recorded and available for screening, either through the complead platform or via the API.

What the data gives you

01

Four-class structure

PEPs ranging from heads of state and ministers down to their relatives and close associates are assigned a class according to their position and seniority, exposure therefore being assessed in terms of actual risk.

02

Role, jurisdiction and dates

All the records include the position held, the area of jurisdiction, and the dates during which the person served in office, together with the source being cited. Thus, the analyst knows why someone is a PEP without having to look for that information.

03

RCA links

People's relatives and close associates are linked to the PEP, each with a relationship type and exposure, and family and business connections can be seen during onboarding.

04

Class-change history

Since records are kept in versions, the transfer from one class to another is shown together with its date. This lets an auditor see the status on the day the decision was made.

05

Status changes and exits

When someone leaves office or drops to a lower rank, the record is updated accordingly; former PEPs remain on file with their exit date, allowing you to decide how long the period of exposure should last.

06

15-minute refresh

The data is typically refreshed every 15 minutes using a change feed, and any new appointments or exits are received by your screening on the same day.

What is covered, and how it stays current

PEPs' roles are sourced from various jurisdictions, grouped by role and seniority, linked to their relatives and associates, and each version is created when any change occurs.

PEP status, weighted by class, in the same score

The class of the PEP has an impact on the Fusion score since a class 1 PEP is given more weight than a class 3. As this data is used in the screening and risk rating processes, PEP exposure is priced according to its actual risk rather than on the basis of a standard flag.

FAQ

Before you ask us

What decides which class a PEP falls into?

Position, seniority and degree of political influence. Each PEP falls into one of four classes, from heads of state and ministers to relatives and close associates.

What does each PEP record show?

The role held, jurisdiction, class, dates in office, current or former status, and the cited source. The analyst can see why someone is a PEP without having to research it.

Which relationship types are covered for relatives and close associates?

Family and business connections, such as spouses, siblings and business associates. Each link carries its relationship type, so an analyst can see how the person is connected to the PEP.

Are foreign PEPs and international organization roles covered?

Yes. Coverage includes domestic and foreign PEPs, senior roles in international organizations, and their relatives and close associates.

Are state-owned enterprise roles included?

Yes. We source senior roles in state enterprises alongside public offices and international roles, each with its jurisdiction and dates in office.

What happens when a PEP changes role or class?

The change is saved as a new version with its date, and the record shows both the previous and the current class. Screening picks up the new status the same day.

What happens to a PEP after they leave office?

The record stays on file as a former PEP, with the date they left office. Your team decides how long the exposure period lasts under your own policy.

Can we see a customer’s PEP status on the day we onboarded them?

Yes. Every record keeps its version history, so you can show an auditor the class and status that applied on the date of the decision.

How are new appointments handled?

New roles are added to the data as they are published and appear in the change feed. Your screening receives them the same day, not in the next periodic update.

Can we test the data with our own queries?

Yes. Send us a set of names, and in a 30-minute session we match them, show each PEP’s class and role, and link relatives and associates where available. A sandbox key is also available.
